Apophysis

Apophysis is a freeware Windows program for designing and rendering fractal flames. It was created by Mark Townsend and has since been improved and updated by Peter Sdobnov, Piotr Borys and Ronald Hordijk. Fractal Flames were originally developed in 1992 by Scott Draves.

Arrowheads

Let’s start with a basic effect, the Add Arrowheads. Use the Pen Tool or Line Segment Tool to draw a straight line. Go to Effects > Stylize > Add Arrowheads and choose a style.

Appearance

The great thing about using Illustrator Effect is the ease of changing its appearance. In the Appearance palette, click on the Add Arrowheads layer, now you can easily change the result by selecting different arrow style. This effect is very useful for drawing diagrams.

Without The Effect?

Without the effect, the arrow shape will get distorted when the line is stretched. With the effect, I can easily adjust the length of the arrow without distorting it.

Round Corners

Draw a rectangle shape, go to Effects > Stylize > Round Corners and enter a radius value.

Without The Round Corners Effect

Round Corners is one of my favorite effects. It is my essential tool for designing icons. Not only it can prevent the round corners to be distorted when I stretch the object, it also saves me a lot of time. Could you imagine how long it will take to draw these perfect round corners without the effect?

Zig Zag Effect

Draw a straight line, go to Effects > Distort & Transform > Zig Zag and enter a value for Size and Ridge Per Segment.

Wavy Line

Draw a straight line, apply the Zig Zag effect, select Smooth Points, and you will get a symmetric wavy line.

Badges

Draw a circle and apply the Zig Zag effect with the setting as shown and you will get a badge shape.

Play around with the Zig Zag options and you may get these shapes:

Pucker & Bloat Effect

Draw a circle, go to Effects > Distort & Transform > Pucker & Bloat, enter -55% (Pucker), and you will get a diamond shape.

Draw a polygon shape, apply the pucker effect, and you will get this shape:

With the same object, change the Pucker & Bloat option to 70%, and you will get a flower shape.

Transform Effect

The example below shows how I can duplicate 12 copies of the object (in increment of 30 degree angle) with the Transform effect.

Play around with the shape and Transform setting, you may get the following:

Roughen Effect

With the Roughen Effect, I can make the trees look more realistic.

Scribble Effect

The example below shows how you can create a sketchy effect combining the Scribble and the Roughen effect. First apply the Scribble effect (Effects > Stylize > Scribble) and then apply the Roughen effect as shown.

Sketchy Icons

If you are constantly using the same effect, it is wiser to use the Graphic Styles to save time and maintain consistency.

After you’ve done the inital sketchy style, drag the object to the Graphic Styles palette to create a new Graphic Style.

Now, select the object(s) where you want to apply the styles. Then, click on the Graphic Style that you’ve just created. Change the fill and stroke color if you want. Don’t forget you can also apply it to text, which remain editable.

Conclusion (There Are More…)

I’ve only showed the basic Illustrator effects. There are actually more cool and useful effects. Don’t be afraid to explore the effect menu and experiment with the other effects such as the Warp and 3D.

Tips For Using Illustrator Effect

Graphic Styles - save time by using Graphic Styles.

Scale Strokes and Effects - you can toggle Scale Strokes and Effects option via the Transform palette.
Appearance Palette - you can turn effect layer on/off or remove it. Double-click on the effect layer to open the option dialog.
Press D to quickly remove all effects.
Expand Appearance - if you want to expand the appearance into paths, go to Object > Expand Appearance. Note: once the effect is expanded, it will become ineditable.

The long-awaited iPhone OS 3.0 firmware, which is officially going to be released Wednesday June 17th, has been fully leaked into the torrent realm. The firmware, which has been available only to registered iPhone developers, is now (thanks to the leak called “iPhone OS 3.0 Golden Master”) ready to be safely used by any iPhone user. It really works (and it’s great!)

Warning: Do this at your own risk.

It will work for 1st generation iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch users.

Here’s how you do it:

1. Download the torrent Go to any famous torrent site, and search for the following:

- 1st generation iPhone users: iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
- iPhone 3G users: iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
- iPod Touch users: iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

If these search results don’t give you any results (because torrents are always changing) search “iPhone OS 3.0″ or “iPhone OS 3.0 Golden Master”. You’ll see “7A341″ in the title. It should be about 230 MB.

2. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes

3. Sync and back-up your iPhone This is incredibly important. If you don’t do this, you will lose all the stuff on your phone. Also, if something goes wrong, this way you can always safely go back.

4. SHIFT+ Restore (ALT + Update for Mac) Hold down shift or alt (PC/Mac) and press “Update” in iTunes after your iPhone is connected. A browser window will pop up. Select the file with the picture of the disk that you have just downlodaed via torrent. It should be called “iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw” or the variations of it seen above.

5. Let it work iTunes will verify the software, and then it will automatically start restoring and updating the phone (but now with the 3.0 firmware). Allow iTunes to install all your data and sync your stuff (contacts, music, apps, etc…)

Remember, if your iPhone is unlocked (aka if you’re using it with T-Mobile or some other non-AT&T provider) then updating the firmware will undo the unlock because it upgrades the baseband. Do not do this if you are using an unlocked iPhone. If your iPhone is jailbroken, updating to 3.0 will undo the jailbreak (until the Dev guys figure out how to jailbreak 3.0, which shouldn’t take long), so it’s your decision based on what you prefer - 3.0 or a jailbroken phone. The process is safe, easy, and quick. Let us know how it worked out for you in the comments!

get inspired when working on new projects. Usually this means searching the various web design galleries for some inspirational web designs. However, recently I’ve found inspiration from some quite unusual sources. Take a look at this variety of inspirational work, and you might find that it can help motivate and inspire you on your next project.

The basic point of this post is to show you that you don’t have to rely on the CSS Galleries to inspire you, there is a lot of creative work out there in various other mediums that will help get you in a creative mood.

Amazing Matte Paintings

Matte paintings are used to enhance movie sets, by either adding to, or creating an extensive backdrop. Nowadays all of this work is made digitally using a Graphics Tablet, and such work can be loaded into a 3D program to create a 3D environment. The level of detail here is amazing, some very realistic work and very visually appealing.

Digital Paintings

Digital painting is becoming a hugely popular art form, and some of the work out there is of a very high standard. Digital Painting is similar to traditional painting in many ways, the main difference being (obviously) that the painting is done on a computer using a graphics tablet and a computer software, this means the artist has the advantage of using effects, filters and layers to enhance the artwork. This concept artist works for Rockstar games, he has a lot of interesting pieces of work in his portfolio, I particularly like the digital concept paintings the most. Check out the portfolio.

Inspirational Graphic Design

Graphic design is probably the closest link to Web design that I have featured, it’s not uncommon for Web Designers to also do Graphic Design work. So although this wouldn’t really class as an “unconventional” source of Web Design inspiration, it is a little different from the CSS Web Galleries we’re all becoming used to these days. There’s so many great graphic designers out there that I’ve barely touched the surface, but hopefully in the near future I’ll being you more and more examples like these.

It’s refreshing to find that there is some creativity in the world of advertising. Far too often ads are made cheaply and to a poor standard, here are a few examples of advertising done correctly.

My original idea was to have a Photography section, but then I thought no… You should be out there yourself seeing the world rather than seeing pictures of it. Vinyl / CD Covers

Vinyl covers are a great way to further extend the feelings of the music and can be a great addition to the experience of listening to music. In a digital age, artwork remains one of the few reasons I would choose a CD album over a mp3 download.
